Community Park and Conservation Area
Woodland | Historic Ponds | Hay Meadow | Community Orchard

About image
Fishponds is a small municipal park in Surbiton - a haven for people, plants and animals alike, with two ponds, woodland spaces, a community orchard and garden, and an area of rich grassland managed as a meadow.

The park was originally within the grounds of a mid-18th century estate, The Fishponds. Now the park is managed by Kingston Council, supported by us - the active Friends of Fishponds group! We run regular friendly Action Days for volunteers to undertake maintenance, planting and litter picking in the park. Everyone is welcome to take part -follow us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram (see bottom of page) or check out the events page on here to stay up to date with our events and activities.

Our next Fishponds action day is coming up soon. We will be meeting on the drive at the top of the hill in the middle of the park at 10 am on Sunday 16th April. We will be tackling a range of tasks including removing scrub that is encroaching onto the hay meadow, weeding the pollinator bed, maintaining the cages around the trees in the orchard, topping up the 'dead hedge' and doing a spot of litter picking. Hope you can join us. No need to RSVP - just turn up on the day.

The Friends of Fishponds aim to improve the park for the local community. We work to maintain and enhance this much loved space through volunteering and sharing information about the park, its history and wildlife.

We do this by:
  • Improving the park and protecting and developing its range of wildlife habitats through regular action days and volunteering sessions.
  • Collaborating with the council and its contractors to share information and coordinate activities. We also collate local people's feedback on park issues and share this to resolve problems.
  • Using our social media and emails to inform and educate people about the park and local wildlife, we also promote relevant environmental messages.
  • Promoting the fun, safe and healthy use of the park and actively discourage antisocial behaviour in the park.
  • Working with partners such as Voices of Hope and Citizen Zoo to organise or promote volunteer maintenance and gardening sessions in the park.
We were established in 2018 and are formed of a management committee and wider membership. To join the group email fishpondssurb@gmail.com. You can also get involved by simply coming along to one of our volunteer Action Days - all are welcome!
